The Liverpool Illustrators
Rhonda Davies/Keiron Finnetty/Mary Lundquist/Phillip Marsden/Louise Morgan/Jane Spencer
The Liverpool Illustrators are a group of artists who have been working and exhibiting together for a year. They formed as a group after completing a residency together at the Bluecoat print studio where they learned techniques in non-toxic intaglio printmaking. Six months later they helped to establish the new silkscreen studio at the Bluecoat, and continue to invest in the facilities there. The group meets regularly to swap skills and to work along side each other.
This collaboration has resulted in the current exhibition at the Arena Gallery, Proof. Proof is evidence; it is also a printmaking term meaning the first approved print made before the numbered edition. The Liverpool Illustrators are using both definitions, referring to the printmaking aspect of their work, the evidence of their development as printmakers is the work itself. It is the proof that they have continued to explore printmaking as well as drawing, painting and craft, since their first group-show a year ago.
Jane Spencer and Louise Morgan have both been freelance illustrators for over 15 years, working for retail, advertising, publishing and design clients in the UK and abroad. About her work, Jane Spencer writes, ‘This work brings together my passions: drawing, colour and silk screen. These are travel sketch books, re-animated through hands-on print processes.’
Phillip Marsden is a visual artist, illustrator and cartoonist who publishes comic books through his press Compromise Comix and has exhibited internationally.
Keiron Finnetty and Rhonda Davies both earned their degrees in art from Liverpool John Moore’s University, Keiron in Fine Art and Rhonda in Graphics. Keiron works for the Bluecoat’s participation programme as well as being a freelance artist, working in schools and with community groups.
Mary Lundquist graduated from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, USA and has been working in the UK as an artist and freelance illustrator.
