Let there be cake!

As part of A Foundation’s TAXED Series, Arena will be inviting all to Arena towers for an evening dedicated to the undeniable joy of cake:

Pasthof (taxed off Städelschule’s Gasthof) is the fourth event in the series, TAXED, our regular events for, and by, Liverpool based artists.

Our most ambitious programme to date takes place throughout Liverpool’s studios in a journey for minds and taste buds. Taking its form from the Städelschule’s seminal programme during the 2002 Manifesta and Documenta, Pasthof is a weeklong celebration and investigation of art and hospitality that truly enagages with that most honest judge of art – the stomach.

Friday 24th July, 6.30pm
A Taste of Apocalypse Now
Red Wire, Carlise Building, 61-69 Victoria Street, Liverpool
(Each locust £1)
Pasthof kicks off with the opening of ‘Apocalypse Now’ at Red Wire Gallery, who welcome in the Armageddon with a feast of locusts and zombie cake. Amazingly nutritious the locust (affectionately known as Sky Prawns) is a better source of protein than beef, but thier swarm can cause massive devastation, so what better a way to get revenge than a nice honey dressing? A special zombified cake will also be available for the vegetarian/squeamish.

Tuesday 28th July, 7pm
Flat Food
Bluecoat Studios, The Bluecoat, School Lane, Liverpool, L1 3BX
(Free, but RSVP essential, please email sachawaldron@googlemail.com)
Sacha Waldron invites the public into her studio for a celebration of the unleavened. Based on an extract from Douglas Copeland’s Microserfs, participants will be invited to eat only flat foods, that is any sustenance that is capable of being passed underneath closed doors.

Thursday 30th July, 7pm
For the Love of Cake
Arena Studios & Gallery, 1st Floor Elevator Building, 27 Parliament Street (enter through Leaf) L8 5RN
Join Arena for a night adoring the various forms of this delectable confectionary. Experience the reverie of a Madeleine, learn the difference between Eccles, Chorley and Banbury cakes and discover the VAT breaks of being a cake not a biscuit (see McVities vs HM Customs 1991).

Friday 31st July, 7pm
Minimalist Banquet
A Foundation, 67 Greenland Street, Liverpool L1 0BY
(Bring a white item to contribute to banquet)
With this monochromatic feast A Foundation seeks to answer the crucial question, can the minimal also be tasty? Participants are invited to bring along a white item to add to the colourless banquet, which will include white Russians and blancmange, and to dress in appropriately pallid shades. Musical accompaniment will include a recording of Frozen Microwave Music from the 2002 John Armleder performance using microwaves as musical instruments.

Saturday 1st August, 6pm
Flying BBQ
The Royal Standard, Unit 3, Vauxhall Business Centre, 131 Vauxhall Rd, Liverpool L3 6BN
(Attendence free but BBQ items will require a contribution)
Pasthof concludes with a spectacular performance cook out. Catch chargrilled sausages as they are launched freshly BBQed by Harry Lawson from his balcony studio.
