Steve Barrett – Abstracts of Iceland
Steve Barrett’s ‘Abstracts of Iceland’ exhibition opens this week at The Galley in Clayton Square.
‘Abstracts of Iceland’ are a group of paintings based upon a trip to Iceland, in the summer of 2010, with the Liverpool Geological Society. I found the landscape of Iceland truly spectacular and awe inspiring. It made me think of how insignificant and fragile we are compared with the power of nature. In Kant’s term, it was sublime. Each painting is inspired by an image seen during the trip. My starting points are the shapes, colours and textures of the landscape but then, as I try to incorporate my feelings and emotions, the painting moves away from reality and takes on a life of its own as a painterly abstract.
